Types
There
are basically three types of ringtones, viz.
monophonic, polyphonic and truetone. Monophonic
ringtones are able to play only a single musical
tone type. When different types of musical tones
are played at one time, the ringtones are
polyphonic. Truetone is the latest type of
ringtones. It has other names like superphonic
ringtone, realtone or mastertone. These ringtones
are now fad because people can get songs on their

truetone is in hi-fi formats like MP3, WMA, etc.
Formats
There
are diverse formats for ringtones. While eMelody
and MIDI are older formats, examples of new
formats are MP3, iMelody and Nokia Smart
Messaging (NMS). Mobile phones that are not using
NMS are using iMelody formats for ringtones. NMS
enables receipt of ringtones in text format by
using certain tools. No data cable is necessary
and one can have ringtones as text messages.
RTTTL is another text format popular for
ringtones. AAC format also supports ringtones.
