Mosquito Ringtone: Silent Fun
A ringtone that cannot be heard by people around
the user of the mobile phone? Very hard to
believe. But that is what exactly happens with
mosquito ringtone. The power of the guardians has
considerably been undermined with the empowerment
of the young people by mosquito ringtone on their
mobile phones. It is as if the power of mobile
phones has suddenly shifted from the hands of the
adults to the young ones by the magic wand of
mosquito ringtone which remain inaudible to the
adult ears. Silently lands the text message in a
school student’s cell phone without the knowledge
of the teacher in the classroom and the student
escapes punishment for violating school
discipline.

Developments
First
developed in UK in 2005, the technology from
which sprang the mosquito ringtone spread to USA
in 2006 via internet. The concept exploits the
inability of most people to hear high pitched
sounds with advancing age. What started as an
ultrasonic sound device to repel teenagers and
allow adults more space and peace turned by irony
of fate to a weapon of power and fun in the hands
of these young people in the form of mosquito
ringtone on their mobile phones. People aged over
20 can hear mosquito ringtone as an exception and
not as a rule. The 17 kHz teen buzz can keep the
youth’s cell phone ringing providing him with fun
that the adult cannot share.
Mosquito
Power
The
sound frequency audible to most humans lies in
the range 200 to 8000 hertz. From the early
middle age the adults start losing their ability
to hear sounds beyond that frequency range. This
phenomenon of decline in hearing senses common to
most adults is called ‘Presbycusis’ in medical
parlance. The teenagers with much ingenuity
converted it to
mosquito
ringtone
to make it advantageous.
